Shadow is your typical loner-type character. He would much rather work by himself, and has a hard time trusting other people, to help him or in general. In that same respect, he will work with others, if it's absolutely necessary. Sometimes, though not as much as he used to, he reminisces about his past, and spends a lot of time trying to do the right thing for his first friend, Maria. Pretty much everything he does, he does for her, to fulfill her wish (were she still alive).

Shadow usually keeps to himself, but can have very explosive anger, and sometimes takes it out on the human race, or people that are simply in the way. Or being annoying. After he (re)learns about his past, however, he calms down a little, and tends to help people more than hurt them. This is not to say that he wouldn’t hurt someone if they got on his nerves. He is a hero in his own special...angry way. Aside from anger, Shadow doesn't show too many other emotions. Showing emotion is showing that you have a weakness. He is very easily annoyed, and has no qualms about shutting people up with a punch in the face, kick to the head, or a Chaos Spear.

Due to his title of the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow is rather cocky. He believes that he is better than everyone else, and often looks down on others. He really only has two friends, and I don't even know if he'd use that term. But he is loyal to those that he has deemed worthy of his friendship.

Fifty years ago, on the Space Colony ARK, Professor Gerald Robotnik was working on a prototype for the Ultimate Life Form for GUN (the military on Earth). Originally, Professor Gerald refused to work on such a project, but when he realized that he could use the research to save his granddaughter, Maria, he decided to work on it. It was titled Project Shadow.

When they first created a prototype for the project, it was a giant lizard that was dangerous, uncontrollable, and very destructive. Hearing of this disastrous first attempt, GUN decided to put a stop to the research and make sure something like this never happened again. They formed a secret mission to have everyone onboard the ship killed, and the space colony shut down forever. What they didn’t know, however, was that Gerald had perfected his research, and successfully created the Ultimate Life Form, in the smaller form of a black and red hedgehog. He had help though, from an alien race known as the Black Arms. Gerald had given the alien leader, Black Doom, the Chaos Emeralds in return for help on the project. Black Doom gave Gerald some of his own DNA, which allowed Shadow to have the Chaos powers that only the Black Arms possessed. Gerald learned only after than Black Doom intended to use Shadow as a weapon in 50 years, when the aliens would pass by Earth once again. When Gerald learned of this, he made a video warning Shadow of this, and instructed him to use the Eclipse Cannon.

Shadow became close friends with the young Maria. So close, in fact, that they were like siblings. They often looked down on the planet, and wondered what it was like. They figured that one day, they’d be able to go down there and find out what it was like.

Shortly after that, GUN invaded the ARK, and the two took off towards the escape pods. As Shadow got in one, a soldier came in and shot Maria. Shadow was devastated. Maria asked him to bring the people of Earth happiness, and hit the eject button as she died. He promised her that he would, and was sent towards Earth.

Upon impact, however, he was taken into custody, along with the Professor. When the Professor learned that Maria was killed, he went crazy and made changes to Shadow’s mind: Changing some of his memories, and giving him a new goal. To exact revenge on the humans who killed Maria. Soon after this, Professor Gerald was executed, and Shadow was placed in a stasis pod on Prison Island.

Fast forward fifty years. Someone has broken into Prison Island. That someone is Professor Gerald Robotnik’s grandson, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. Naturally, this can only mean bad news. Eggman has learned about some project his grandfather had been working on, and intends to use it as a weapon to once again take over the world. When he opens the stasis pod, Shadow emerges. At first, Eggman thinks it’s Sonic, but quickly realizes that it’s definitely not. Shadow promises that he will grant Eggman a wish for releasing him. Shadow’s main goal is to take revenge on the world for what happened to Maria, due to the alterations on his mind. His first act upon being released was to break into the bank and steal a Chaos Emerald. Soon after, he meets Sonic, who is similar to him in just about every aspect. Sonic believes Shadow to be an imposter, and blames Shadow for making him look bad.

His goal is to use the Chaos Emeralds to power the Eclipse Cannon, and blow up the Earth. Enter Rouge, a treasure hunter who is actually a double agent for GUN, trying to collect information on Project Shadow. She joins up with them, promising to use her skills to find the Chaos Emeralds.

With six of the emeralds, they have enough power to fire and blow up half of the moon. While Eggman uses this show as a scare tactic, Shadow was using this to prove to Rouge and Eggman just how capable he was.

Collecting the last emerald and placing it in the Eclipse Cannon powered it up, but the colony reacted to all seven emeralds, causing it to start falling towards Earth. While the others hurried to stop the colony, Shadow stood aside, believing that everything was going just as it should. That is, until Sonic’s friend Amy pleaded with him to help them out. Somehow, this made Shadow remember his original memory with Maria, and his true promise to bring the people happiness and hope.

Shadow joined Sonic and defeated the Biolizard, his original prototype, but then it fused with the colony, intent on keeping its crash course. With the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Shadow and Sonic took their Super forms and defeated the Final Hazard, and used Chaos Control to put it back into orbit around the Earth. Being so weakened, and feeling as though he fulfilled his promise to Maria, he didn’t bother to rejoin everyone on the ARK and instead let himself fall to Earth.

Despite what everyone had thought, Shadow lived. He was found at some point by one of Eggman’s robots, and was put into stasis in one of the Doctor’s bases. While on one of her treasure hunts, Rouge managed to come across Shadow once more. She freed him, but they immediately were under attack by the robot guarding Shadow, E-123 Omega. Omega had been designed to guard Shadow, but was angry at Eggman for being made so powerful, and only to do guard duty. After his fall from the ARK, Shadow suffered severe amnesia, and could only remember his name, and the memory of a girl named Maria getting shot. The three of them teamed up to form Team Dark, and continued on a mission to find Eggman. At some point, they stumbled upon a room filled with rows of androids that looked like Shadow. Since he hardly remembered anything, this caused him to believe that he, too, might be an Eggman android. [Some more stuff happens, but it really isn’t important, and this is already tl;dr…]

Soon after, the Black Arms did indeed return as promised, fifty years ago. Black Doom took to seeking Shadow, to try and sway him to join with them and take over the world, with the promise of telling him about his past. GUN also tries to get Shadow to cooperate with them, as well as Sonic and Co. Shadow, still not remembering anything, decides to use everyone to find the Chaos Emeralds and regain his memories.

Shadow soon collected all seven emeralds and was once again confronted by Black Doom, who told Shadow of their genetic link, and then took the emeralds, bringing the Black Comet to Earth. Shadow managed to remember everything, and took his Super form to kick Black Doom’s ass. After defeating the alien, Shadow used Chaos Control to teleport the Black Comet in front of the Eclipse Cannon, which was set to fire. So when it did, it blew up the Black Comet, as well as all the aliens.

During this time, GUN realizes that Shadow has saved their butts on numerous occasions, despite how they had always treated him. They offer him a position in GUN as an undercover agent as their token of thanks and as an apology. Shadow accepts.

Sometime later, Shadow is sent on a mission to retrieve Rouge, who GUN hadn’t heard from in more than a day. Her mission was to retrieve the Scepter of Darkness, which she did. Shadow completes his mission, finding her, and escorts her back to the rendezvous point in Soleanna. They are cornered by Eggman, who is also after the Scepter of Darkness. In the scuffle between the three, Rouge drops the Scepter and breaks in, releasing Mephiles the Dark. Mephiles is a half-god from the future, who steals Shadow’s shadow, and takes his form.

[tl;dr. This game was so full of fail, that I’m not gonna go into too much detail. A bunch of stuff happened, but in the end, Sonic and the princess of Soleanna undo everything that takes place using time travel, and it retcons the entire game. Nothing that takes place in this game technically happened, and so Shadow knows nothing of any of it.]
